Born Ramsgate, England, 1882. Amshewitz studied at the Art Academy in Edinburgh, at the RA Schools under John Singer Sargant, and was elected to the RBA in 1914.

He was considered a South African artist, even though he only lived in South Africa from 1916 to 1922, and again from 1936 until his death in 1942.
